IAFF/NFD Member Wins Technician of the Year Award
Robert "Car Seat" Carrick Wins Award
April 7, 2011 - The
Oklahoma Safe Kids Association presented Norman Fire Department
member Robert Carrick with the Car Seat Technician of the Year
award. This state-wide award is given annually in recognizing
excellence and dedication to this field. Carrick, a dedicated
car seat technician since 2005, received the award in front of a
capacity audience at the Martha Collar Tech Reunion held April
7th, on the campus of OSU-OKC.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated the
leading cause of death and serious injury for young children is
automobile crashes. Child passenger safety (CPS) is one of the
nation’s most significant injury prevention initiatives.
Technicians train to install and educate caregivers on the
proper use of car and booster seats. The Norman Fire Department,
along with several dedicated IAFF members, are keeping young
children safe by offering this service free of charge.
Household Hazardous
Waste Collection Day
April 1, 2011 -
Help protect Norman’s environment by bringing your household
hazardous waste to Norman’s annual Household Hazardous Waste
Collection Event scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday,
April 9th, in the southwest parking lot of the Lloyd Noble
Center. Citizens coming to the event need to enter either
from Jenkins or Chautauqua on the south side of Lloyd Noble
Center at G. T. Blankenship Blvd. There is no charge to
residents of Norman.
The collection provides an opportunity for Norman residents to
dispose of items that can not be put in the waste stream or
taken to the landfill.
Many items will be accepted at this event: oil, paint, kerosene,
cleaners, pharmaceuticals (in original container with personal
information marked through), pool chemicals, pesticides,
computers and computer accessories, automobile and small truck
tires (without rims) and many more things.
Some of the items that cannot be accepted are radioactive waste,
explosives, business generated waste, household trash, and
compressed gas or containers. Products need to be kept in their
original containers and chemicals should not be mixed.
Re-usable household chemicals can be dropped off for
redistribution to citizens. Free 5 gallon buckets of white
latex paint will be given away as it becomes available.
Staff is seeking volunteers to help with the event. Some of the
work assignments will include setting up, surveying
participants, traffic control, unloading materials, and bulking
paint and oil.

Project Smoke Detector: Second Alarm
January 4, 2011
- “Project Smoke Alarm was a resounding success”, said Norman
Fire Chief James Fullingim. “The team members visited 739 homes
and installed 176 smoke alarms” he said.
On December 4, 2010, sixty volunteers and twenty-five members
of the Norman Professional Firefighters - Local 2067
participated in a grant program through the Oklahoma State
Department of Heath to provide a free smoke alarm to a targeted
area in Norman. During previous months the City of Norman
experienced tragic fires, resulting in six fatalities. This
project allowed the Norman Fire Department Fire Prevention
Bureau to heighten community awareness of the importance of
having a working smoke detector in the home.
Project Smoke Alarm is a joint effort of the Norman Fire
Department (NFD), Norman Citizens CORPS and the Oklahoma State
Department of Health (OSDH) that will provide free smoke
detectors to Norman residents living in a single-family
dwelling. On January 8th, 2011, Project Smoke Alarm 2 will be
working in a targeted area defined by Porter Avenue, west to
Berry Rd., Robinson Street south to Main, to offer free smoke
alarms and install them for the residents. The only criteria for
receiving the smoke detectors are allowing the firefighter with
the community team to install them.
Project Team members will consist of union
members/firefighters, local community volunteers and may include
police and sheriff volunteers. Residents can call 405-245-9522
to verify the identity of any team members working in the
targeted area.
If you live in the targeted area please be prepared for teams
to arrive between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm on January 8th, 2011 and
consider letting them enter your home for the purpose of
installing a new smoke alarm. All citizens of Norman are
eligible to participate. On Saturday January 8th, 2011 Norman
residents can call the Norman Fire Department at 405-292-9780
and dial extension 31 to leave a message requesting the Fire
Department to schedule a time to have an alarm installed. During
normal business hours you can contact the Norman Fire Marshal’s
Office at (405) 292-9780 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00
p.m. Monday through Friday to schedule your installation.
Point of contact for further information regarding this
program is the Norman Fire Marshal’s Office at (405) 292-9780.

2010 Annual
Retiree Pancake Breakfast
October 9, 2010
- Each year the brothers of Local 2067 who comprise the Norman
Fire Department take the time to honor all of those who have
blazed the way for those of us currently in the middle of our
careers as professional firefighters. Since both "eating" and
"breakfast" have withstood the test of time in creating an
atmosphere of camaraderie and brotherhood in firehouses
worldwide, it has always been the obvious choice in providing a
comfortable setting for those in which we pay tribute.
This year's breakfast was held today, on Saturday, October 9,
2010 at Fire Station #7. Thank you to all who took the time to
stop in and welcome back our retired brothers with some good
food, fun, and fellowship.
This year's event saw an additional guest in that Lt.
Governor Jari Askins was in attendance to help celebrate the
career memories of these retired members. Bob Jones from the
Oklahoma State Pension office was also present to give the usual
'updates' on the pension system. We had about 40 retired members
of our Department attend.
In addition, we had the newest piece of firefighting
equipment on hand to 'show-off'; Engine #8. Several of the
retirees commented they "...love seeing the department go back
to red trucks...". They loved and where impressed by it!
